Employee Spotlight: Stephanie Wels
1. What is your position at Clarify and what do you do?
I am a Product Manager here at Clarify – working at the intersection of multiple teams and bringing new software products and features to life.
2. What excites you most about Clarify?
The overarching passion for improving healthcare with technology and data. Healthcare is an industry that touches all of our lives and is sadly not as in tune with data and analytics as it needs to be. Clarify is rapidly changing that in a way that can impact every layer of the industry, thanks to a team that is driven by this passion.
3. How did you hear about Clarify / How did you get here?
After graduate school, I joined McKinsey and focused exclusively on healthcare analytics and value-based care for over three years. One night I was researching healthcare products and stumbled upon Clarify. Browsing through the website, I was instantly struck by the company and clear mission. After meeting with the team and learning more, I joined in just a matter of weeks.
4. What aspect of your role do you enjoy most?
Being able to work with many different people who have incredible amounts of talent. On any given day I’ll have conversations with the data science team to assess results of models, the engineering team to plan a new user interface, the clinical transformation team to listen to customer needs, and so much more.
5. What project have you worked on here that you’re most proud of?
A product involving patient cohorting and risk stratification. This was the first project I was able to have a hand in designing and building from the ground up. The project began with conceptualizing a product that identified groups of high-risk patients who had unique clusters of comorbidities- impacting both their cost and outcomes. After discussing statistical methods with the data science team to bring it to life, I couldn’t help but smile when seeing outputs of stratified patient cohorts that were highly insightful for potential customers.
6. If you weren’t working at Clarify or in healthcare / technology in general, what would you be doing?
I have always wanted to own a small farm, stemming from my love of nutrition and homegrown food. I also recently became a certified yoga instructor, so would mix that in to run some sort of yoga studio + fresh food café. Ideally in a more rural area to provide these to folks who currently lack access.
7. What is something people would be surprised to know about you?
My childhood dream was to become an astrophysicist.
8. What’s your favorite app?
Spotify, no contest.
9. Where is the coolest place you’ve traveled?
Buenos Aires- the people, food, architecture, and landscapes are all incredible.
10. Salty or sweet?
Impossible. I know I mentioned nutrition above, but don’t make me choose between pizza and pie.
11. Favorite book, movie, and musician/band?
Book – The best book I’ve read recently is Florida, by Lauren Groff.
Movie – Movie is tough, but will choose The Tree of Life.
Band – For a favorite band, The Strokes have been my go-to since middle school.
